Who Is Natalie Dormer?

Natalie Dormer: Killer Queen

She charmed her way into marrying the guy on the throne on Game of Thrones. Meaning? This year’s got even more in store for Natalie Dormer than last, when she brightened our movie/TV machines without rest. In 2014, there’s a whole new slate of big roles, including the Hunger Games finale. Get ready for our favorite royal to go punk rock.

Nobody looks better in the whole Ren Faire-damsel rig than Game of Thrones' soon-to-be-queen, Margaery Tyrell. But actress Natalie Dormer—who sums up her recent string of period roles as a bunch of “elegant, long, flowing, gentrified skirts”—sometimes just wants to rip 'em all off. We'd call this look a first step. Shout-out to the clipper-happy groomers at The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, who shaved half of Dormer's head for her role as “badass” documentarian Cressida. (She'll be in both finale installments.) She didn't mourn very long for her lost mane before moving, she says, into “Phase ‘Rock It Out.’”In other words, despite her milkmaid face and her rosebud mouth—usually fridge-magnet askew—the buzz cut gives her “a shitload of attitude.” Which is good, because that's kind of her thing.

The recovering tomboy and adrenaline junkie lives like the action-movie lead she hopes to be someday. She's currently training for the London Marathon, would rather you not open difficult jars for her, thanks, and picked up a scuba-diving addiction after filming an underwater crash scene at some “post-Iron Curtain leisure center” (her phrase) in the Czech Republic. “I love going out of my comfort zone—I live to go out of my comfort zone,” she says. “Obviously, you have quieter years than others—you don't go jumping out of a plane every day.” At the thought, she sounds faintly bummed. Only on the occasional Sunday does she take a break from badassery: “I'm a bed monster,” Dormer says. So fetch her the Sunday paper, serf, and some egg-inclusive foodstuffs, and she's yours. — Sarah Ball | GQ
