The original Segal door lock was developed in 1912 by Samuel Segal, a New York City Police Officer who saw a need to protect residents form thieves "Jimmying" or spreading the door frame to gain entry. The lock was quickly accepted as the best way to secure a door against unauthorized entry due to physical attack.
